Born in Nice in 1964, Jean-Baptiste Gourinat was educated in Marseille. He was a student at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris from 1985 to 1990, and earned his PhD at the Sorbonne in 1993. From his seminal work on Stoic dialectic (his PhD dissertation published in 2000 by Vrin), he developped his research in two directions: the history of ancient logic and dialectic, and the history of Stoicism. From 1997, he has been a resarcher at the CNRS, and from 2006 he has been "directeur-adjoint" of the Centre Léon Robin. Since 2012 september, he is the "directeur" of the Centre Léon Robin. He wrote his Habilitation in 2006, Ratio disserendi. La place et le rôle de la dialectique et de la logique dans la philosophie antique. He is the author of several books on Stoicism (including Les stoïciensin the "Que sais-je?" series) and of many articles on Stoicism, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and the Lvov-Warsaw school.
He has also published a translation and commentary of Plotinus' treatise on dialectic (Ennead, I, 3 [20]). He has reprinted classical books on Hellenistic philosophy (like Guyau's book on Epicurus) and he has been the editor of some of the seminars of the Centre Léon Robin. Since 2013, he is co-editor of the journal Philosophie antique. Problèmes, Renaissances, Usages, first with André Laks and Michel Narcy and now with Thomas Bénatouïl and Julie Giovacchini (Vrin). Since 2019, he is also responsible, with Hélène Casanova-Robin, of the ANR project PhiLat (Philosophical Lexicon of the Latin Language).
